Trying to beat the restrictive covenants in your contract of employment

November 29, 2006 · Filed Under How to Start Your Own Recruitment Consultancy · 1 Comment

I read today with interest in the Recruiter Magazine a West Sussex recruitment consultant (Salli Coburn) from Hylton Bishop who recently lost a case over restrictive covenants, something I have also experienced at first hand.

As a result it is important to protect yourself by reading your contract and working round it, although it is rare that companies will pursue you it can happen. I feel very sorry for Salli being charged costs of £18,000, It seems a case of breaking a nut with a sledge hammer. In my case a director and a manager left to set up a company and took three members of staff, in this case I can understand a company taking legal action and a fine, but we survived and the company is now one of the most successful companies in their market.

Still anyone thinking of leaving her company will think twice I am sure.

To go to these extreme lengths for a consultant does seem over zealous, surely some less costly arrangement could have been made. I would love to hear the comments from the consultant in question and her point of view.

If you are interested in more info regards to this you may find this link useful from Roydens on restrictive covenants.

Less Eastern Europeans Taking UK Jobs

November 22, 2006 · Filed Under Recruitment News · Comment

I was surprised to hear this from the Home office, that statistics show the rate of flow from Central and Eastern Europeans had dropped during this year. In fact the number applying to register for work in the UK in the third quarter of 2006 dropped by 2.8%, which followed a 1.7% drop from the previous quarter.

When you take into account the 12% increase for the first quarter, this is a huge shift. This will have an effect on various industries I am sure. In particular welders come to mind whom I know have been complaining about Eastern Europeans taking their jobs, or at the very least making the hourly rates drop so much it becomes un workable.

John Philpott, chief economist at the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development, says:

“This apparent change in trend might be explained by the fact that the most eager migrants from countries that joined the EU in 2004 have by now probably tried their hand in the UK jobs market, a somewhat improved economic and employment situation in other parts of Europe, and an easing of restrictions to entry to migrants from these countries that were initially imposed by most other EU member states.

Recruitment video for Netscape

November 19, 2006 · Filed Under Recruitment Video · 2 Comments

I know I am a bit late with this, in regards to an easy read for a Friday but we can only blame Lycos for that. So this Sunday afternoon I came across a recruitment video for Netscape and thought it would make a fine post although a little late.

I don’t know what you think but all I can say is "it was crap". I could explain myself but it isn’t really worth the effort, although I think it is a perfect example of an ad agency trying to produce a piece of work based on artistic points. As a result it looses the complete point.

Does it inspire you to want to work for Netscape, I think not!! Anyway judge for yourself

Am I angry or what!!!

November 18, 2006 · Filed Under Recruitment Views · Comment

Finally Recruitment Views is up again, my apologies to you all. Just to put you in the picture my hosting company Lycos were down and as a result so was my site. In fact I think it was down for about three days, so their 99.9% uptime has gone in one fail swoop.

What makes it worse is there was no correspondence reporting the problem, their phone lines were on answer phone, and now that it is back up no apologies or even an explanation from them either.

It was a very frustrating time and I am glad it is over, but it is something you wouldn’t expect from a large company.

Or am I just a blogger junkie!!

Battle Between Two Recruitment Consultancies

November 14, 2006 · Filed Under Recruitment News · 1 Comment

When will companies ever learn, I know we all have seen this before, yet again another two recruitment consultants are in the press again fighting over data protection. It still amazes me how companies still do not adequately protect themselves against data fraud, It has happened to me on both sides of the fence.

The only advice I can give is you need to get someone in to really shore up your systems, because I can guarantee one of your consultants will steal your data. Having said that I used Arithon, which is a web based system and just by its nature is more secure. It is always hardest at the start when you haven’t the cash to invest in protection, maybe the route it to keep your consultants happy so they do not leave!

Anyway if you want to read the article it can be found at computer weekly

Times Educational Supplement relaunches their Jobsite this Friday

November 9, 2006 · Filed Under Recruitment News · Comment

The other day I was pleased to hear from David Bowen the Marketing manager of TES "The Times Educational Supplement", a paper I have know for many years albeit only as paper delivery boy! So I have to admit that is about as much as I know and of course we didn’t have Internet in those days.

David asked me if I would do a pre launch review, which comes on the back of the recent National Online Recruitment Awards. Obviously as I am not a teacher and as such my perspective may be slightly off, I do have a good feel for job boards from my constant use over the years.

Having registered and applied for a couple of their positions, I found the site to be very easy to navigate and non time consuming, a huge plus and makes up for its lack of a sophisticated search function. In fact their browse facility is great, as it is simple and logical, you can just pick the educational level then the subject and then apply, very easy and short steps.

What it does lack is a simple way to apply for these roles, which would not only benefit the candidates but also give TES some valuable self promotion. It doesnt need to be sophisticated. For example when a canidate clicks on an email address, with some simple coding you could get the subject box to be filled automatically, with the vacancy number and the fact it is from TES invaluable for all.

Another area which I really like is their own blog, which is written by a number of senior people within the industry. Now if they just add a blogroll for other teacher bloggers, it would then add a more varied and interesting perspective.

Fundamentally it’s the simplicity at the end of the day which will make it work, with all the huge relevant and detailed content available for teachers, for me this mix gives TES a winning combination compared to the other more sophisticated systems out there.

A Revamp of Recruitment Views

November 4, 2006 · Filed Under Recruitment Views · 3 Comments

Recently I have been thinking that Recruitment Views needed a bit of a revamp, personally I am no where near as talented as those guys and girls at Exceler8ion. Still I thought I would have ago after the success with the wordpress upgrade.

So after playing with the templates at www.wordpress.com free blogs, I was quite keen on the WP-Andreas09 theme. Mainly because it had three columns and it uses sidebar widgets, which makes it so much easier to edit but more importantly I am less likely to make mistakes!

Anyway I hope you like it, personally I think it is easier for you to navigate. I may still get a real designer on the case at some stage but for now I am happy with it. Oh and I thought the blogroll looks so much better!

The worst job in the world

November 3, 2006 · Filed Under Funnies · Comment

Well its Friday and I have not put a video on for a little while so I thought I would do a quick search on Google, for the worst job in the world.

I nearly put this on before but it was the bad language that made me hesitate, but this time I decided I would post it with the warning, but it will make you laugh.

Still I can think of worst jobs, as I have recruited for many of them.
