Absent but not forgotten

February 28, 2007 · Filed Under Recruitment Views · 2 Comments

Well its quite late here in the UK and although I should write serious content, I just wanted to write a diary note to say that I am looking forward to my meeting in London on Thursday.

Although it is a networking meeting, I am just looking forward to saying Hi to fellow blogger, Louise of UK recruiter. It is funny writing a blog you form these impressions of other recruitment bloggers, each day I read their blogs and you formulate an impression of their personality.

OK this is a UK meeting but I couldn’t help feel I would be missing a few of the US recruitment bloggers and share a beer at the bar and have a laugh on how Joel managed to turn his blogging into a salaried job, or Jim with his microphone or even Dave getting me drunk at the bar persuading me to write an article to push his latest post.

It is the strangest feeling how I have become to love you all, I have learnt so much over a relatively short time I have been writing, in the end I suppose this article is just to say that although this is a UK meeting, it would be fun to meet some of you from the other side of the pond.

Still maybe one of these days we will find an excuse to all meet.

Just pathetic!

I was doing a quick search for something amusing to post, not with a great deal of luck. What I did come across is a recruitment video for TiVo, which is fine well produced and to be honest what you should expect from a company who specialise in communications.

What I couldn’t believe after further research is this recruitment video was not on their blog, which was not surprising as it has not been updated since August!!! So from a bloggers point of view, they are committing "blogging suicide."

But it doesn’t end there if we then go to their careers page we find 40 vacancies, a lead there for you guys and girls in the states. Also their is a link to their culture page, but low and behold no video.

What is going on here, this company really needs some help!

Here’s the video, which I couldn’t find on their website.

US Military Hit their Recruitment Targets

February 21, 2007 · Filed Under Recruitment News · Comment

I am a little late with this post, a sign of being busy I suppose. I thought this article I picked up last week on the American forces hitting their recruitment target is particularly interesting in regards to the fact they have been very visual in using youtube, myspace and other forms of social networking, to bring in the numbers.

So will we see the UK taking more advantage of this with their current recruitment retention issues

Free Recruitment Tips or How to work less earn more

February 20, 2007 · Filed Under Recruitment Tips · Comment

Yesterday I came across an excellent free training resource for recruitment consultants. It is a series of podcasts on Futura’s website by Warren Kemp of recruitment matters.

I have listened to the first few and will certainly recommend them. The training is based on headhunting or execuive search, but to be honest if you are in contingency recruitment you really need to start looking at headhunting techniques, certainley if you are in an industry where there is a lack of quality candidates.

Although the podcasts are free do not treat them lightly as Warren normally charges for this trainning and his "Golden Question" is certainly worth taking down, you can certainly teach this old dog a few new recruiting tips!

Oh and John if you spot this post I love the new Futura site

Looking for Help

February 15, 2007 · Filed Under Technology & Recruitment · Comment

I was contacted by a Blogging friend today, not sure if that’s what you call it but it is certainly part of the social networking web 2.0 thingy.

The funny thing is Rob has a great blog called a Welsh View, which is hugely popular and I have mentioned it before. What is weird (small world scenario) is that presently he is doing some work for a recruitment consultancy, in developing a mobile website for their vacancies and has asked if anyone can test it for him, while he is developing the technology.

So if you can help Rod out it would be most appreciated details can be found here.

Is your PC running Slow!

February 13, 2007 · Filed Under Technology & Recruitment · Comment

Yesterday I had a bad computer day, in fact it started just over a week ago when the hard drive crashed on the PC, so now I am using the laptop. Thank heavens for ASP or web based systems, otherwise I would have been buggered!

Although the hard drive is dead it isn’t a complete disaster, as I made a few contingency plans, which I thought I would pass on.

Firstly the database of my contacts is on Arithon, which is a web based applicant tracking software, my hard drive is backed up on box.net and my favorite web sites are synched on firefox using a plugin called Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer,  which saves a copy of all my favorite sites, so in effect things are back to normal by plugging into the Internet.

The only real problem is that my daughter has been using the laptop and she has managed to fill the hard drive with her music videos causing the laptop to run very slowly, so with a bit of house keeping I have managed to get it back to normal.

I thought I would pass on a few tips that I used below.

  1. Empty the temporary Internet folder on Internet explorer, by going to tools then Internet options.
  2. Check how much space there is on the hard drive, by going to mycomputer, right click, pick properties and if the drive is full, delete those videos and programmes you do not use. On the tools tab click the defragmenter button, I suggest you do that at the end of the day as it will take some time to clean the disk.
  3. Vacuum the heat exchanger and fan, this made a huge difference as it stops the continual noise of the cooling system by making it more efficient.
  4. Finally one thing that really slowed me down was Internet Explorer 7, and can cause some real issues particularly the plishing function, so I have decided to uninstall.

I know this has nothing to do with recruitment but as we all use computers, I thought it may be of help from a layman’s point of view, gained over a few years. I am sure there are many other tips and if so please add them to this post as it would be appreciated.

Which Recruitment Blogger is on Top!

February 9, 2007 · Filed Under Technology & Recruitment · 1 Comment

Yesterday I had an invitation fom Andy Kazeniac to read some comments on the Compete blog, one is always wary, but none the less I am always keen.

Having read the article which discussed "Jobster and Facebook" the "in subject" at the moment. Ryan postulated the probable increase in activity to Jobster, would be about 1% based on a similar relationship between Myspace and Simplyhired, whatever the figure it can only be good for Jobster.

Although Ryan questioned the success of Jobster, I think he is underestimating Jason’s resolve and determination, when you combine this with recent key site changes. I am sure Jason will upset a few established leaders very soon.

Moving away from this I did take a deeper look into Compete and found their site fascinating. They have a webbased application, which compares the activity of websites, a useful tool if you are as competitive as me!! So based on this I thought I would compare myself with Louise, knowing that I am well behind. Unfortunately I found that Compete only collects data from the States, so for us UK Recruitment bloggers, we will just have to wait a little longer.

Still it was fun comparing the recruitment blogger’s in the Sates, to see who is on top.

One final comment I did install their tool bar, as it was a great way to check out the other sites that I visit. One word of warning I had to uninstall, as it seemed to effect my Google reader in firefox. If the same happens to you, I suggest you let them know at Compete.
