Female Only Recruitment Consultants Please!

November 26, 2007 · Filed Under Recruitment Advertising · 5 Comments

Since writing this post Jark contacted me, saying they did not write the advert and that it was a disgruntled employee, of which we have all had them at one time or another. What was interesting is that it just shows you how careful you need to be when it comes to the Internet, not just from a candidates point of view with facebook and the likes but what the client put up on the net.

On top of all this it is disappointing that www.gumtree.com leaves these vacancies on their site since August, not only that they should be aware that the ad was illegal in the first place. I decided to leave the post as to show what actually happened to give the post its full context.

I bet that raised a few eyebrows, I have to admit I just had to show case this advert. It was advertised on the 24th of August, their only excuse is it must have been in 1996 when the company were established, even then it was illegal if I remember rightly.

But my gut feeling was it’s some rookie that joined www.jark.co.uk and knows nothing about recruitment advertising, mind you surely everyone knows about sexual discrimination.

Now as my inquisitive nature was sparked I thought I would try to find this chap or chapess on linkedin! I then had my next surprise, would believe that a company turning over in excess of £40 million and 150 employees there would be one recruitment consultant, trying to push the boundaries of recruitment using probably the best business networking site on the planet, wouldn’t you!

Oh well I will leave you to read the advert below and postulate, how on earth someone got away with such and advert.

Also I have highlighted some of the best mistakes and just for your information, the only employee at the time of writing was the Technical Director on www.linkedin.com

You thought you had it bad!!

Well its Friday again and as I couldn’t find anything fresh and funny in regards to recruitment, I thought I would be a little self indulgent with a classic Monty Python Sketch.

So to give it some relevance “you thought you had it tough, but when I started in recruitment we had no such thing as emails we had to deliver the CV on the back of a pony and travel through Birmingham on a dark and wet Friday night……”

Huxley Associates re-launches internal career site

November 22, 2007 · Filed Under Recruitment Jobs · 1 Comment

huxleyassociates Yesterday I was contacted by James at Huxley Associates, asking if I would run with a press release on the re-launch of their internal recruitment web site www.huxleyopportunities.com,  so rather than just copy and paste I thought I would have a look around and give my point of view!

Firstly I thought it would make sense to look at how it was before, by visiting waybackmachine and noticed not a huge difference, but the latest version is much clearer and easier to navigate.

I also decided to compare them with the winner of Nora the West Midlands Police and the other finalists, to see if theirs was up to the mark. At the end of the day shouldn’t a recruiter be able to produce the best internal career web site!

Having checked out the winner I then moved on to the runners up and I was impressed with sthree. What I didn’t realise, which I am sure is obvious to most of you is that Huxley Associates are part of the same group, which explains a lot in their similarities.

What did catch my attention was the style was completely different to sthree, almost as if they were looking for a hugely different type of employee. What did disappoint was the lack of information on the company, and why on earth was their no link to the group website sthree, maybe it was a test for new recruits to see if they have researched the company.

None the less it is well put together and if I was looking for a career change it certainly puts the company in a good light, I particularly liked the profiles section of the different roles.

So if if I was them and wanted to win NORA next year, I would put in more corporate information, maybe some video and maybe a blog, but hey then I am a little biased as a blogger.

What was your Motivational Phrase

November 21, 2007 · Filed Under Recruitment Views · 3 Comments

running-in-the-rain It was poring with rain when I went for a run earlier this evening, it was dark and depressing, particularly as I went out without my waterproofs! Still I wasn’t going to run for long, with it being only the third run for nearly a year.

As I was pounding the streets and thinking should I cut the run short I remembered an old running friend of mine who said “no matter how you feel finish the session”, so I did. That phrase has stayed with me for all my adult life along with “when the going gets tough the tough get going”.

It was phrases like that that kept you motivated in recruitment, so while I was getting soaked I wondered what other phrases were inspirational to recruiters, maybe “Just Pick up the phone” seems to stick in my mind too.

So if you have any favorites, please feel free to add them to this post I would love to know what helped you succeed.

First Day on the Job

November 16, 2007 · Filed Under Recruitment Views · 2 Comments

I have to admit I have not seen too many funny videos to post for a Friday afternoon, so I decided to pull out and old favorite of mine. Its a little dated but it still brings a smile.

I am probably stretching it with a tenuous link to recruitment, “first day on the job”. So if you haven’t seen it before then it is an old advert for the Berlitz language course, and if you have I am sure it will still bring a smile.

I must say that I  can relate to it, as 20 years on trying to learn Spanish I still manage to drop myself in it. On top of this we have all made a few bloomers on our first day on the job, now haven’t we!

Enjoy the video below and have a good weekend.

Secretarial Careers

November 14, 2007 · Filed Under Recruitment News · 1 Comment

secretarialcareers My right hand is functioning again so with a bit of luck I should be able to write more regularly from now on, although I still haven’t got back on the bike yet!

Today’s post is as a result of being contacted by a new Job board www.secretarialcareers.co.uk a niche job site for secretaries, that is if you haven’t already guessed.

I am quite sure the site will succeed, as they are part of the Totaljobs network and unsurprisingly the site is very easy and simple to navigate, mind you who’s idea was it to use pink in their theme, a little too stereotype if you ask me.

There isn’t anything revolutionary, although I did like their Podcast and Vodcast page, which had some good advice but one tiled “Is love in the air? How to deal with office romance” makes me wonder what reaction there would be from secretaries, are they being typecast again? I do not think I can comment on that one.

reed Secondly on the subject of Job boards, I suppose the biggest news is that Reed Jobs have quietly added some paid for features, with the most amazing being a cv searchable database, to be launched on Monday. I for one will be looking forward to checking that out and I will be interested in the reactions from Monster and Totaljobs. In some ways its going to be strange to look at a competitors database of candidates!!

Nice to meet you.

handshake Having interviewed thousands of candidates over the years, I used to recon that I could tell someone’s personality from their handshake.

To me it was very important, as I was interviewing people for sales roles and I looked for signs of confidence and control, so a damp weak handshake just put me of straight away.

What I wanted to see was a candidate introduce themselves and take my hand with a firm dry handshake, nothing would be worse than seeing the candidate dry his or her hand on their jacket before they took mine. The same goes for recruitment consultants.

So when I saw Andy’s post “The Top Ten Handshake types and what they reveal about you” I realised I knew something after all!

To be honest it was those first few seconds when I decided whether they were good or bad, the rest of the interview was to confirm my initial gut feeling.

How consultants select candidates for sales roles these days, without meeting them I will never know.
