Work Life Balance
One blog I do enjoy is Fortify your Oasis, partly because it is so well written by Ronan and it has an excellent mix of posts. What caught my eye in particular was a recent post on “Work Life Balance”. It made a good read and certainly questioned my own work life balance.
As someone who works from home and in one of the best cities in Europe (Granada Spain), I should have the best work life balance of any recruiter. Although on greater reflection working from home does have its drawbacks, you are never away from the office and when I am, the phone redirects so there is no escape!
It is just as hard to get away from the computer and when I do it’s usually for chores like collecting my Daughter from school or being asked to put out the washing, its almost as though they don’t think I do any work at all, but in truth I probably work more hours than if I was in the office, at least at 5.30 you can go home. Mind you as an ex recruiter you would still be making those calls from home, certainly in the days without mobile phones, if anyone can remember that.
I have been working from home on and off over the last 7 years and if I was to say what one thing has made it all worth while, it would be watching my daughters grow up, something many parents miss out on these days.
So I am sure no one out there has any sympathy for me, but at least I don’t get as stressed out as this reporter did for the BBC, I hope his work life balance has improved.
Follow this link for the video courtesy of the BBC, mind you I have seen the odd boss over react a little like John Sweeney in the past!!
Oh not so very nice to meet you!!
In case no one picked up on this article found on the BBC, in regards to an overly strong handshake where a Kathy Rentas managed to floor the Assistant Attorney Jennifer Keene.
I just couldn’t help not to give it a mention, particularly after my comments on handshakes in a recent article.
So Andy do you recon it was a bone crusher or a hand wrestler or could we add a new one to your list, a GBH!
Recruitment, The Dads Army way!
I was going to save this till Friday, but what the hell. Starting the week with a smile is just as good.
This morning I picked up an alert for a recruitment video, which was a clip from Dads Army. The video starts with a job appraisal and how to deal with sensitive issues such as dress code and motivation, in a style unique to Captain Manering.
Then it moved on to recruitment advertising using posters around the village, an old take on a new term “recruiting for passive candidates.” I have to admit using posters is something that I have not used for quite sometime, probably as a direct result of the Internet making us just a little bit lazy.
It shouldn’t be overlooked though and is certainly a good option when you are looking for local talent. Take time out to think about where your candidates meet up or socialise, because quality candidates are not necessarily surfing the net or chatting on Facebook. I remember once seeing my competitor advertise in the toilets of the local pub, need I say more!
The video clip below lasts about 8 mins so only suitable for the lunch break.
Following Cheezhead
I thought Cheezhead post yesterday on what people searched to find his site, made me take a look too, with some interesting searches.
- recruiter placed me at a job i now want to leave
- sexist walt disney
- dead end job
- brain surgeon interviews
- recruiter placed me at a job i now want to leave
- i lied to my recruiter
- irish institute of inkeepers
- what is so bad about recruitment consultants
- how to become a brain surgeon
- how can i break my restrictive covenant and take my clients
Some interesting searches, I wonder who it is that’s looking to steal his companies database.
Mind you I cannot beat Cheezhead’s number 6 jason goldberg is an ass, hilarious.
Sexist Recruitment at Walt Disney
Its good to see that we have come a long way since 1938 with this rejection letter from Walt Disney Productions, where a Miss Ford was flatly refused to be interviewed because she wasn’t a boy.
Mind you she wouldn’t let a small thing like that discourage her, as she eventually became a animator and more interestingly she kept the letter for 70 years.
Thanks to Rob of A Welsh View for spotting this and her Grandson for making the letter available.
Nervous on your first day at the office, you will be
You have been offered the job and looking forward to start, maybe a little nervous but excited. Depending on the company your first day could be a well planed induction or just dropped into the hot seat.
Well this company certainly goes all the way with their induction, you can only start with good karma and a greeting from the big cheese here!

Recruitment Video not for the UK
Well its Friday and recently it has been difficult to find some funny recruitment videos, but this did make me laugh
Mind you I would be interested to know if they would get away with it in the UK, I can just imagine all the complaints to the Advertising Standards committee if it was aired.
I wonder if they got a huge response to their vacancies or did everyone apply for jobs with Viagra!
Mind you I couldn’t see any vacancies in Australia, maybe they have all been filled. .

Too Much Time Blogging!!
I didn’t intend to write a post today but this joke from blaugh caught my eye, and certainly made me feel guilty the amount of time I am on the Internet reading and writing posts these days.
And I am sure a few of my fellow recruiter blogger’s may feel the same, not mentioning any names Dave, Joel and Jim, still I would be interested in Louise’s opinion.
Ps where did they find the time for that video
