What was your Motivational Phrase

running-in-the-rain It was poring with rain when I went for a run earlier this evening, it was dark and depressing, particularly as I went out without my waterproofs! Still I wasn’t going to run for long, with it being only the third run for nearly a year.

As I was pounding the streets and thinking should I cut the run short I remembered an old running friend of mine who said “no matter how you feel finish the session”, so I did. That phrase has stayed with me for all my adult life along with “when the going gets tough the tough get going”.

It was phrases like that that kept you motivated in recruitment, so while I was getting soaked I wondered what other phrases were inspirational to recruiters, maybe “Just Pick up the phone” seems to stick in my mind too.

So if you have any favorites, please feel free to add them to this post I would love to know what helped you succeed.

  1. Stephen, I agree it is funny how things get ingrained at such an early stage and are always ‘there’. There is one statement that I was taught very early on in retail, “The customer is always right”. It is not only applicable to recruitment, but also to any service industry. Of course the customer is not always right as we know, but letting them believe they are is the secret to many a good relationship!!
The one that has stuck with me in recruitment is a motivator of sorts, as it is the “never ASSUME” with the well known meaning of assume. It is always there in every conversation I have with clients or candidates, and motivates me to just ask that one extra question each time – I call it the Columbo question!!

  2. I always liked –

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realise how close they were to success when they gave up” – Thomas Edison

Has helped me on those days when everything seems to be going wrong =)
